Steelers Memories
That time they won the 1992 Challenge Cup in Dubbo. (Video)
That time, this time and that time where they were ALIVE IN THE FIVE~!!! I remember keeping the Mercury posters and free Steelers headband.
(Video - beating St. George)
(Video - robbed by St. George... check out some of those forward pass calls plus McIndoe definitely gets to the grubber first at the end. People who complain about officials these days should look at these clowns)
That other time they made the finals and lost to the Gold Coast Chargers...
Better memories of that time Alan McIndoe scored five tries against the Gold Coast Seagulls. I watched on Saturday arvo ABC TV - even 9 year old me couldn't be bothered asking my dad to take me to a home game versus sucky Gold Coast. (Video)
That time they smashed the Broncos on Friday night footy and Brisbane complained we'd watered the pitch to slow down their international backline. An outrageous claim. Sure they had Willie Carne and Michael Hancock on the wings, plus Sailor on the bench, but we had Brendan O'Meara and Jody Rudd marking them. So I don't think it was necessary, losers. I think it was a leaky sprinkler, or something else totally above board.
Steelers would've had a better chance at smashing the Broncos in the 1992 Grand Final too. We'd already beaten them at Dubbo!
That time John Simon kicked a field goal to seal a win against the Raiders and it was replayed endlessly on a commercial for natural gas in Wollongong. I couldn't find the gas commercial, or the field goal, but found some other highlights from the match. (Video)
That time unheralded outside back Brendon Hauville scored under the posts to tie the game at Norths on ABC TV again, only for teenager Shaun Timmins to shank the conversion and then cry.
ABC TV again and I think this was the time Rob Wishart kicked off at Campbelltown and the ball met a gale force wind and ended up behind him. Wests ball 35m out, on the attack.
That time they played a midweek match against a touring Great Britain team, losing 11-10. Also the only time in footy history a crowd has been undercounted as the official gate was split 50/50.
That time a rookie Trent Barrett scored an amazing match winning try on a grubber and chase against Parramatta. I couldn't find footage :(
Wish I couldn't find footage of that preliminary final instead. Over twenty years on and I'm furious again.
I think this was the time where Paul McGregor stepped inside the last defender while narrowly behind against St. George, only for the defender to reach out and steal the ball from his one hand carry under the new stripping rule. Pretty sure it was Ben Kusto. So Mary was outfoxed by the best at least.
That time three years after Super League promised global expansion into China and beyond, the Steelers were playing the Adelaide Rams in Whyalla. Obviously before the town was tragically wiped out due to carbon deficiency.
That time they lost to the Cowboys and got booed by a home crowd. It was the Cowboys first ever win. (Video)
That time... actually I don't remember this one at all but it's a nice win against Manly with some great Ch10 Big Game footage. Cliff Lyons makes a hilarious (rare) mistake - it's so bad I believe you can hear Toovey for the first time say "there's gotta be an investigation" in the background as it happens. Then later Ian Russell carves through the middle with a massive step, before passing onto Dean Schifilitti... probably my two favourite players at the time combining. (Video)
That final time playing their last first grade game against the Bulldogs, where they needed to win by 128 points to make the top 10 finals on points differential. They lost by 1. It was closer than the points differential indicated.
